Term 3 2016

Y4 Quad Kids Competition

A rather damp morning in June didn't stop our Y4 children taking part in the Quad Kids competition at Dyke House School. Quad Kids is a relatively new competition consisting of athletics activities in which every team member takes part in four events. The children were excited and enthusiastic as the competition began.  The first activity was a 60m sprint and our pupils powered down the the track as fast as they could to recoed their times. Next up was the thowing event with each pupil allowed three throws. Long jump was the third event and then the morning was complete after each pupil ran a long distance race of 600m. Our children took part in the competition enthusiastically and gave their very best.  Once all scores had been collected and tallied up, Fens finished in overall 3rd postion.  Well done to all involved!

Y6 Cricket

An enjoyable afternoon of cricket was had by all at Park Drive Cricket Club.  Y6 teams from schools in the town demonstrated their superb throwing, catching, fielding and striking skills as they took part in this year's competition. Fens’ pupils co-operated well as a team with their overarm bowling skills improving throughout the morning. Some superb batting, catches and fielding performances meant that scores were very close at the end of matches. Fens’ team put on an excellent display of team work and their positive attitude was commented on by staff from other schools.  Sacred Heart were the overall winners and we wish them luck in the next round.

Y5 Tri Golf Competition

Tri golf is a new sporting competition for Fens pupils to be involved in. This term children from Y5 thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon at the Domes participating in the town competition. Each team member took part in all of the ten challenges where control, accuracy and timing were key.  All scores were recorded and totalled. Even though we didn’t finish in the top three we had a great afternoon and again our pupils attitude was first class! Well done to all involved!

 Term 2 2016

Sportshall Athletics Town Competition

The first week back after the Christmas break saw the Sportshall Athletics Town Competition at Dyke House School.  After winning their place in the final, Fens Y6 pupils were looking forward to a further afternoon of athletic competition. Each member of the team took part in two field events and two track events.  Fens’ pupils were fantastic as they competed both determinedly and fairly! At the end of the afternoon, when all points from every competition had been totalled, Fens were announced as bronze medal winners! Staff and pupils were delighted.  Well done everyone!

Basketball Cluster Competition

During January some of our Y6 pupils were involved in a basketball competition between schools in our cluster group.  Fens entered two teams into the cluster tournament.  Both of the teams played extremely well and demonstrated excellent sporting skills and great team work.  Throughout the afternoon there were some outstanding individual performances from pupils of every school.  At the end of the tournament scores and baskets were added up and one of Fens’ teams had managed to win one of the two places ‘up for grabs’ in the town competition. The pupils enjoyed their afternoon of competition.

Basketball Town Tournament

The town tournament took place towards the end of January.  After winning their place earlier on in the month Fens went along to Manor Academy with a quiet confidence and a positive attitude. In all twelve schools from the town were involved in the competition which was organised into two pools.  The winners and runners up of each section were to play in the semi-finals and final.  After an exciting afternoon of play each team had competed in five games.  There were some very closely fought matches and Fens finished a creditable third place in their group. Well done to all players!

Netball Cluster Festival

At the beginning of February a small group of Y6 pupils went up to Manor Academy to take part in a netball competition.  Pupils were looking forward to the competition and demonstrated excellent footwork skills, quick, accurate passing and a superb shooting ability throughout the afternoon. As not all of the seven schools in the cluster had sent a ream the competition was played then each team played again in friendly matches.  Fens finished runners up and are looking forward to taking part in the town final in March.

Cluster Cross Country Competition

The first week back after half tem saw the cross country cluster competition at Summerhill.  The event took place over two afternoons and Fens were represented by 50 of our KS2 pupils. Lower KS2 pupils ran on Tuesday afternoon with upper KS2 pupils competing the next day.  The course was quite muddy and challenging but all pupils completed it successfully. Some children were delighted as they managed to finish in the first 10 and so look forward to the town competition at the beginning of March. A very well done to everyone who took part!

Town Cross Country Competition

During the first week of March, eleven of our children visited Summerhill for a second time in a fortnight as they had previously qualified to represent the Manor cluster at an event earlier in the term.  The races were slightly longer and the course quite a challenge but the pupils of Fens were not deterred.  They all gave their absolute best and managed to successfully complete the course. Well done to all involved.

Girls Football – Cup Competition

The first of the girls’ football competitions took place in March.  Twelve schools were involved altogether eagerly taking part to try and win a place in the cup final at Victoria Park.  The games were very close and after the early rounds it was announced that Fens had won a place in the semi-final.  Stranton were our opponents. The closely fought semi-final showed superb talent and outstanding skill and team work from both sides as it ended in a 2 all draw. Extra time was played and again the teams couldn’t be separated as the final score of 3-3 showed.  Penalties were taken to decide which team was to go to the final.  The girls were so keen to take a penalty for their team. Saves were made and goals were scored. After a nerve racking five penalties each Stranton were the winners.  Our girls took defeat graciously, shook hands and wished the winners luck in the final. We were very proud of our team as they dealt with a very unlucky and disappointing result sensibly and maturely.  Well done girls!

Town Swimming Gala

The first of the town’s swimming galas took place on Monday 14th March. Ten schools were involved with the smaller schools having a gala the next day.  There were two heats and Fens were in the first for each of their races.  We had five boys and five girls from years five and six who had been chosen for the competition after  their weekly swimming lessons at Manor Pool.  The individual events involved back stroke, front crawl, breast stroke and then a number of team relays.  Our boys won all of their races in their heat but as races were timed we were unsure of any positions until they were announced at the end of the competition.  The last race saw the top five teams fighting for double points in the canon relay.  This relay involved every team member. It was so exciting as Fens led from the start, each team member swam their very best in order to maintain the lead. Fens won to the cheers of staff and parents.  At the end of the competition our team received a few trophies.  We were overall winners of the cannon event.  The boys were overall winners and after points were totalled from every event Fens received silver medal for overall second place.  Sacred Heart had won by only 2 points. It was a very exciting morning and again another proud moment for the pupils of our school.

Y5 Boys Football

During February, 9 year five boys took part in their first football competition of the year at Seaton Domes. This competition would decide the leagues for this year. The boys entered the competition full of confidence despite only completing a few training sessions due to poor weather. After playing some exquisite football, Fens finished 4th in their tight group, winning two of their five games and securing a place in the Championship league.

The Championship league took place on 15th April at the Domes. Again the boys entered the competition full of confidence after the previous round. There were 6 teams in the group and Fens finished 5th after winning one game and drawing one game. Despite results not going the way we may have hoped, the boys were a credit to themselves and the school with their never-give-up, positive attitude. They have done themselves proud with the way they have played throughout the two competitions the Y5 team now look forward to the Y6 competitions next year.

Term 1 2015

Y6 Boys Football

During October, our Y6 boys took part in the first of many football competitions this year.  After weeks of trials, a team was selected and took part in the first round of matches, which would decide the leagues for this year.  An exciting afternoon of football finished with Fens on top of the group and winning a place in the Premiership League and also a place in the Champions ESFA cup competition.

The Champions ESFA cup competition was played on the last day of term before the start of the October holidays.  Our boys tried their hardest and played their very best but were unlucky not to win all of their games.  Holy trinity were the overall winners and they go on to play in the next round.

The Premiership Competition took place on 6th November at The Domes.  Fens approached the afternoon with confidence.  There were eight teams in the competition and our team won two of their matches.  However, outstanding saves by both of our goalkeepers along with impressive defending at the back weren’t enough and our boys finished in 7th place overall.   The Y6 team now look forward to their cup competition in February.

Tag Rugby Cluster Competition

During October, 20 pupils from our Y6 classes took part in the cluster tag rugby competition at WRFC. It was a wonderful afternoon of tag rugby.  Six schools were involved in all and the competition was organised into two pools.  Fens had two teams taking part. The competition was enjoyed by all with some very spectacular tag rugby skills on display. Teamwork was excellent and lots of tries were scored.  Fens’ red team successfully won their pool with Grange the winners of the other group.  Thank you to Manor Staff who organised and refereed the competition.

Tag Rugby Town Competition

A successful afternoon at the Manor Cluster Competition meant Fens tag rugby team had won their place in the Town Competition.  This was held at WRFC at the end of October.  It was a busy afternoon with many of the schools in the town involved.   The competition was organised into two groups.  At the end of the afternoon the top two teams in each would form the semi-finals.  The pupils of Fens demonstrated some impressive rugby skills and displayed great sportsmanship as they listened and accepted decisions from the referees.  The children were excellent representatives and the school was very proud of their performance.

Manor Cluster Sportshall Athletics Competition

Congratulations to our Y6 pupils, winners of the Sportshall Athletics Competition at Manor at the beginning of December.  Nine boys and nine girls represented the school in an exciting afternoon of athletics competition.  Each pupil took part in two field events and two running events. All events were very closely contested. When  scores were finally totalled  Fens were announced as overall winners. The team now go onto represent the cluster at the Town Festival in early January. Well Done everyone!

Y3 Tennis Tournament

Over the last few weeks our Y3 pupils have been receiving tennis lessons from a coach from a local tennis club. Throughout the weeks they worked on tennis skills in preparation for a competition at the end of the term. The coach chose a group of children; four boys and four girls to attend a mini tennis competition at Manor College. The competition was held during the last week of the autumn term.  There were five schools involved altogether.  The children took part in a range of challenges where points could be won for their team. Everyone enjoyed their morning and there were some fantastic tennis skills on show. Well done to everyone who took part.
